One Fine Timepiece - The Harper by Jord
(GIVEAWAY DETAILS BELOW)
I’ve got to admit, I have pretty much stopped wearing a watch for a while now. It’s not that I don’t like wearing a watch, but maybe more about the watch I was wearing.
I never really wore a watch while in the shop. I see some people do that, but I just don’t care for it. It’s too easy to scratch the face of a watch, so I just avoid wearing it in the shop. (Keep scrolling below for a few shots in the shop…just did it for the fun of it)
I’ve got something that might be turning me back into a watch-wearing citizen once again. You see, Jord (pronounced “Yode” like Yoda with no A) sent me one of their wood watches to try out, and I’m liking it so far.
There were two things that caught my eye about this watch and their watches in general: they have a nice, minimalist look to them and this particular one just had some really nice tones that are a little different than I’ve seen other places.
In years past, I cured myself of wearing a watch with one of the linkage type of bands. The metal ones I had would always grab my arm hair and yank it out, about 10 at a time! Yeeeouch! I switched to leather bands for watches and I really ended up liking both the look and fit. Plus, they kind of break in to your wrist after a while and fit even better over time.
This one shipped with a walnut linkage type band. I do think it would be better than the metal ones and it is truly beautiful with the wood, but they also sent me one of their leather bands, and I’m really excited about that one. It sure is nice to have options! It actually shipped with the quick pins so you can swap bands in a matter of a couple of minutes, without the need for tools!
The watch you’ve been seeing is the Harper black Marquina marble (that’s from Spain) and walnut. The walnut they source is from Eastern Europe typically and the lumber comes from cultivated trees, making it sustainable harvesting.
The Marquina marble is a very deep slate color with these pearlescent white almost lightning-like streaks in it (at least mine has that. I’m sure there are some different designs since this is a natural substance.) I really like the white streaks.
The Harper that I have features a thin walnut bezel nested between bronze-colored finishes. I think that’s one of the stand-out features of this particular one. The colors just really play well with one another.
The leather band I chose is a medium brown/tan that pairs well with the watch face and finishes. It’s a little lighter than the walnut linkage type band that it ships with, and I actually like that about it. I think it brings out the dark face and features a bit more.
UNBOXING:
If you’re thinking about giving one of these as a gift, know that it will impress. As soon as you lift the front of the box to reveal the contents inside, it screams quality.
In the box, the Jord watch is wrapped around a nice little burlap pillow, but even before you get to that, you see the high-end terry cloth that is laying atop of the timepiece. Also, they included a little oil touch-up pen to refresh the walnut if it starts to get a little dry. Moving that aside, you get to the main course…The Harper.
To unclasp this watch, you pinch on each side of the underside of the band. It actually opens from two different spots and all folds together, unlike many other watches I’ve seen that flip open from one spot. It’s a nice detail.
SETTING THE WATCH:
Instructions inside the box are very clear about how to set the watch. The knob has two “clicks” or detents that can be unnoticeable if you’re not watching for them. (see what I did there?)
Pulling the knob out to the first detent and rotating clockwise sets the actual day of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.). Rotating counterclockwise sets the date.
To set the time, just pull the knob out to the second detent and wind it as needed. They do note that you should not pull the crown out to the second detent to set the time until the second hand is at 12.
